Movie Talk ------
By: The Old Man 1/2/2006
What a way to spend the time when the computers are down. Wow, let me at it. What a topic for on going conversation any where and in any work place environment and university. Come to think of it, how does a conversation start and what makes it drift into talks about movies? Who is around you and what type of people are they? Well today here at the office, the day started of pretty well and just got better, because our computer online system was off line and the call for a technician was going to take at least an hour, so every body had to find some thing to do, and our fearless leader, was up against it as to how best to keep us interested and focussed, because we are the news magazine and journalism side of the business. But it wasn’t long till the questions went to, who was at work and who was not and why? We are a small business which conservatively does a lot of work for the dole work place role playing. There are four ladies (two of whom were absent) and seven men (two of whom were absent) including our fearless leader. Some how, the topic focussed on women’s magazines and even the women got involved.
One of our favourite ladies is of course Mona Lisa, and we have our Australian Counter part here whom I had better call Sonia Lisa, as she is quite a startling Resemblance of her. Our fearless leader always jokes about how much he loves women’s things and women’s topics and women’s rights and he jokes a lot about the new age guy thing. Which annoys me a lot, but I pray for him any way. Then I chipped up about the literary stuff that is around these days and how all these women’s magazines are just next door neighbour chatty stuff without ever sticking ones head over the fence and doing it face to face, which got a lot of laughs from every one. And then the dialogue some how got jerked out of it and then it focussed on movies and the first one was about The Passion of Christ. Wow, you should have been here to hear the conversation on this movie this provoked. What an explosion of jumbled opinions and views and judgements. Another favourite is of course Helen Shapiro better known to us as Jesse Shapiro And who would have thought that we have such hidden talented ladies amongst us as these two. Can any one get into anything so enthusiastically as when the topic of movies comes around out of sheer necessity. Some how the conversation almost always centred on Male type roles and movies and then I put in all about Sher and wow this got a great rave review, especially her role in mask. We how ever have no one here who looks like Sher, so our Helen/Jessica, is a great winsome catch for us. Helen of course is well known for her charity appeals tributes and her family life and work life and yes our Jess is the same. Then which films have seriously affected each of us personally, one bloke said, Apocolyps Now, and one bloke said, Being John Malkovich, another said, Prick Up Your Ears, which I have never heard of till now, one women said The Green Mile and Once We Were Warriors. Most of us liked it, but most also said, it was not even close to the actual biblical account though for me, well when I went to see it at Foresthill Shopping Centre Movie Cinema about four years ago, I hated it and went and complained and asked for my money back and got it back as well. Then another shift to other movies came and went and the flow was enormous, and amazingly enough, it was the men who was really into it. And the two women were quite silent. But it was the men who kept on going, from movie to movie for over the next two hours. From Rocky movies and the authors of such movies and other amazing discoveries. One for me was that Silvester Stallone actually wrote the script for his first Rocky Movie, and other movies, and then from fight movies, to war movies to the Dear Hunter, to Love stories and the modern day movie heroes, and Star Wars movies and Harry Potter, and they type of audiences it appealed to the Shawshank Redemption, to the Wedding Crashes which even the women folk joined in, and which movies are the great movies of the times and which ones are classics of their times. Even Ace Ventura came in for a small mention, and Dodge Ball also came in for a small mention.
Then we have Marjorie Main who has played in many an exciting movie and eventually became well known in her role as Ma Kettle of the Ma & Pa Kettle series, who of course is our own wonderful Wendy Kettle. And our fearless leader is of course none than a younger version of Pa Kettle played by Percy Kilbride, better known to us as Steva Koilbride. And they still make a great pair to this day. Our fearless leader said Cocktail and Underground, another woman said, Braveheart and as for me, well I have many, mostly to do with Scotland such as Grey Friars Bobby, and Braveheart, And Good Bye Mr. Chips, because I am into all of those teacher and College type movies. I am a teacher and Mentor at heart. It is great to be able to have a look at our look-a-likes. How can we not compare our look-a-likes with those of the movie screen for looks talent and dedication to the search for truth in aspects of life.
Here we have Wendy (Ma & Pa Kettle) and Steva, living it up, on the screen, just as they do here. Its wonderful. They make a great pare. It is amazing how the conversation can swing from one topic to another, and how it can develop into another sphere by its own, like what is your likes in Foreign Movies, which turned me off as I am not into them most of the time. How ever I do like a lot of the Chines martial Arts type of movies like Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, or Hero and My Teacher Mr. Kim. Then some how the focussed changed to ethical and moral sportsmanship in movies and then in sports in general and then especially in Soccer and Aussie Rules and even in Cricket. Come on Aussie come on, wake up….smile….get into the groove of making the best of your day, even when things look a little bit more than sad. Get a move on with allowing your self to express yourself with out worry of how the other person is going to think or say (be polite of course, not vulgar). Even when we are sad, we can put a smile on our dial for a while.
Then we have our very own Burl Ives who is world famous for his movies and singing voice and surprisingly for his great sense of humour. But to us, in our humble work place we have our man Ian Ives. Some liked it and some hated it and our fearless leader said he dislikes cricket very much (he’s a ferocious soccer man), and then in to Tennis and especially the Women’s game, with the amount of nude type of women’s tennis playing clothes. This got a lot of attention because of the immorality of their current uniforms on court and every one dislikes their outfits very much, its just too revealing for adults and children alike. Then the topic went to who are the most beautiful and handsome players of every ones choices, and the most beautiful woman tennis player from Evon Goolagong (Cawley) from Australia, to the Middle European women, but not the American women, and only a few of American men in the movies especially the American Negro ones, and only a couple white men from America, to Germany, to Australia, to Sampras, to Roddick, to Federer, and even to Haas and Marco Baghdatis.
And then we have our mild mannered man Conrad Phillips who played an exceptional role in the television series called William Tell, but to us he will always be Adam Tell. He was a traditional hero of Switzerland who during the early 15 hundreds went out of his way to go against the bigoted law mongers and tax collectors for the King back then, and swore he would never give up his rights for any man nor king. He was shown here to be the true steadfast and dedicated man of his word and a sound leader to the peasants and noblemen of the day.
But what happened to our heroes in Australia? I think they must have slipped off the scale of approval these days. Maybe if they won a lot more than they are losing, they might once more gain that special interest and grace and favour in our hearts again. Its not that they can not win, because they can, its just that they are not prepared enough to got to greater lengths to win each game all the way through to the final and then win the finals as well. Then the focus was back to the most beautiful women actresses, and actors. The list was too many to name here. How ever the film clip of Makita got great reviews.
And yet no work place would be complete with out our own version of Julio Iglesias, for us it is our man the remarkable George Iglesias. The list goes on. Julio we know is a well known singer and song writer and innovator and great family man. George of course is just as dedicated innovator and dedicated to his family and relations as a whole. Then we moved onto the accidents that happened to such players and the attacks to such players from some one in the crowd and the out comes and of the heroism of the player to come back, including Martina Hinges. Then the strength of a person and the ability to keep their ground under all conditions. Well this lasted a little while. Then onto the footy, using it as politics and power plays for big money pay backs, apparently its all for the media attention or so the common consensus is here. Then onto the tallness of a lot of women in sport and in the movies. And the list goes on.
As for me, well I had several choices presented to me, but the one I like best is Robert Donnat who plays Mr. chips in the movie Good Bye Mr. Chips. As for the rest of our great crew, well there is still another article to write and present them to you, which is really worth waiting for. Mr. chips displayed the quiet achiever type of personality, with a sound reverence for the education and character building of our young and in many ways, this is me too, though some would argue with me on this point, though in vain I think. One of the things I really like about this work environment, is that it promotes a large volume of topical conversations on every thing and its all right. No one gets too upset or put off on any one else’s point of view. Even though there are very strongly held points of view on a couple of the topics which came in for its share of cajoling, every one took each others point seriously and well. What a work place this is. Come and join us. But what turns out to be a problem ends up in being a great time user and opportunity for more fellowship and friendship building. So when the computers or other electrical faults happen grab a large drink of water or a soft drink or a coffee or a tea (but nothing else) so don’t worry and be happy and get into it. Its great.
