WHOSE A JONAH
Many a man was called a ‘Jonah’ in his time as were a lot of women too…in fact women were often called “sinkers” because of their ability and presence onboard ship to destroy the command and reputation of a ships captain amongst his crew where in the end the ship began to sink not only in morale but also in to depravity and lust for her, and for the captains position if he refused to share her with his crew. There by any man a women was seen to be more of a curse than a blessing while on board ship….smile I wonder if that’s still true today…ha,ha,ha,ha.
Anyway, any who began to be known as a Jonah was known to bring bad luck to all those they served time with, at whatever work they were required to do, by the owners of the business, or shipping line, or large company of any kind, as well as in the coal mines and even in prison.
But then again no one south of the Canadian border had heard of Jonah Zachariah Hamah-Dor who was by his very nature and stance was a man to be reckoned with. At the age of fourty five he was standing five foot eight, of brown to jet black shoulder length hair, deep shining black eyes and a smile that was very deceptive tot hose who had never known him, weighing in at one hundred and ninety pounds, and all of it solid muscle, broad of chest and powerful of frame, was a lumber jack from way back in the Canadian mountains. He had a lot of French, with a bit of Scots and Alaskan to boot in him. Coming from whaling stock on his fathers and mothers side he had eventually ventured into the lumber jack business at the age of twenty five. He first came into this world way out in the out back of the Yukon Territory along the Peel River.
He had come into the north west of the States five years ago now for adventure more than any thing else, and he had a desire to work hard and make a lot of money and buy land before going back home and settling down for good. But there was some thing mysterious about him that seemed to rile a lot of folks, till they got to know him a whole lot better. Being quiet most of the time and not given to speaking much about him self, he seemed to get into a lot of trouble, which seemed almost impossible for any one else to get into and then some how it would turn out alright in the end. So his name was not only a trouble to him at times but it was also a name to be proud of too, except for those who lost out to him in the end. To them he was always a Jonah and had to be avoided or gotten out of the way as soon as possible.
He was amazingly honest and no side stepper when it came to what was right and what was wrong and who was to blame for any law breaking and who was right for breaking it, including himself. He was a semi Bible believing man but few who knew him would ever say that of him, for they had never seen him with one in his hand. He was naturally on the right side of the law and more so when it came to injustice’s being done around him. And more so if those injustices originated with in the local town council and law and state parliament by laws and by the banking institutions as well. He just could not stay out of trouble whenever these things were in progress.
Now though after five years of being in the States, he was tired of it all, and he was ready to go home and settle down in his mothers ancestral lands from up on the Peel River across to Dawson to Nenana up to Fort Yukon through to Lakes End at the head of the Sheenyik River and across to Aklavik which had been his mothers people for over two thousand years now. Even though he had bought land down the back of the Big Horn Mountains and across to the Washikie Needle Mountains, for just one hundred dollars U.S. he was ready to settle down. It was a huge area by any ones counting, and the land was his by decree from the dozen tribes whose lands they originally were. He had simply stepped into a fight that had not been his in the first place. It had been amongst some red Indians and some white folks in the banking industry over land issues - Then the danger began for all of them and it nearly cost him his life more than any one else’s because he knew the Laws of God so well that it was with these laws that he had won the Indians case against the white folks in the law courts. So it was made a decree by the twelve tribes involved in the land disputes that he was given full title of them for a thousand years, for him and his family from then onwards. He thought his trip home was the end of all of his troubles, yet it was just the beginning. So who could rightly call him a Jonah after all!
